Discover parenting ourselves in an 8 week mindfulness training
(The training is held in Dutch)
Together with Susan Bögels, a new mindfulness training has taken shape. We have developed a training based on the principles of mindful parenting applied inwardly. This training is designed for anyone who wants to get to know themselves better, experience more calm and clarity, and learn to relate mindfully to the different parts within themselves.
You will get to know your inner parent as well as the different child parts within you. Over time, you learn to relate to and guide these parts as a compassionate inner parent. In this 8 week training, using mindfulness and yoga as core practice, you explore your triggers and patterns and develop greater calm, clarity and resilience in yourself and in your relationships.
Mindful parenting ourselves: an inner journey
Within each of us lives an inner family. Parts that want to care, parts that want to protect, and parts that are easily hurt. These parts often take the lead, especially in contact with others. In Mindful parenting ourselves you learn to recognize these parts within yourself and to approach them from a wise and compassionate inner parent.
Mindfulness meditation helps you consciously direct your attention to the present moment, without judgment. It is also a way of coming home to yourself: to who you truly are and to your origin. This origin is your authentic self, from before you adapted to what the world, culture, parents, teachers or partners expected of you.
Your inner voices and protective parts
Throughout life, we take expectations, rules and judgments inside ourselves. They live on as inner voices and attitudes: parts within us that want to guide, correct or protect us, but that can also become critical, strict or demanding toward ourselves and others.
In addition, we develop protective parts to cope with pain, tension or insecurity. These parts once served an important function, but they often react as if we were still children. They keep us stuck in old roles and patterns, especially when we feel triggered.
All these parts together form how we experience ourselves. It is not a single “self,” but a whole inner family. At the head of this inner family stands our inner parent: a natural attitude of wisdom, clarity and compassion. Healing, becoming whole, and relating in healthy ways, whether with your children, partner, friends, colleagues or parents, begins with developing a safe relationship with these inner parts.
How the training works
Mindful parenting ourselves is a group training of eight sessions in which mindfulness meditation and yoga form the foundation. Mindfulness helps you become aware of bodily sensations, emotions, thoughts and impulses that arise when a part within you is activated. This mindful attitude is the attitude of the inner parent. Yoga supports this process by helping you embody and regulate these experiences.
The training is an inner journey aimed at integration, healing and self acceptance. You learn to explore your own triggers and reactions and to gradually transform them, so that you can relate to yourself and others with more calm, clarity and presence.
